HOW WE CHOSE THEM
We’ve either read these titles — or plan to. They’ve been recommended by members of the expat+HAREM community, mentioned by our guest bloggers, and noted by fans of expat and travel lit during our live #LitChat on Twitter, written by experts who’ve supported Expat Harem the anthology, and they also sit on the shelves with our own work.
ALL ABOUT WOMEN
Most of the books in this selection are by or about women travelers, expats, and emigrees. Or, women observed through adventures in travel and expatriatism. At expat+HAREM we believe cultural wisdom pools at the intersection of women and travel — and we hope we’re making the case that expatriatism belongs in that equation too, along with emigrants and Third Culture types. So, no better place to start! Soon we’ll widen the net to men.
WHY READ HISTORICAL LIT OR — YIKES! — SCHOLARSHIP
The parallels, baby. Here’s why we like it, especially concerning places we’ve lived or traveled: The romance and grit of historical travelogue connects us to the land — and reminds of travel’s transformative force in the lives of women. Reputation-risking. Life-threatening. Culturally redeeming. Personally empowering.
WHAT MAKES THESE HYBRID TITLES?
Although the titles are mixed here, we do recognize a distinction between general travel writing and the output of expats, Third Culture Kids and emigrees. See the discussion here. If you have something to add please email us.
